Under the reign of English kings from the Middle Ages, Périgord was the theatre to the 100 year war, and the traces can be found everywhere ; fortified churches, over 1000 castles and bastides, fortified towns built by the French and also the English to defend themselves. The best examples of these towns being Monpazier and Domme.

Grotte de LASCAUX

Closer to our times, Périgord has become famous as a prehistoric region. Prehistoric men left us our first tresors in European art such as rupestre (cave-art) paintings in the Lascaux caves near Montignac and Font de Gaume in Eyzies. Other fantastic caves such as le Gouffre de Proumeyssac and la Grotte du Grand Roc offer an infinit, astonishing diversity of natural forms created over millions of years.   Visitez la gotte aux cent mammouths (un ensemble de mammouth et bouquetins)

Traditional rural architecture created little villages of honey coloured stone houses in a countryside so beautiful and varied that it is a wonder to the eye. Old, abandoned gates and porches hide their secrets and the countryside is strewn pigeon-houses and bories, little round cabanes in dry-stone with lauze (stone-slate) rooves.

For the more activie, there are many leisure activities and sports . The rivers offer beachs for swimmers, and most of the bigger towns and villages have swimming-pools or lakes. Canoe or kayac rides on the Dordogne or the Vézère are very relaxing, you go down the river with the stream and minibuses take you back to your starting point. Bicycle or horse-back rides, walks following set-out pathes in the forests and there are several golf courses for amateur or confirmed players.

And who could abstain from the Perigordine cooking ? Rich foie gras pâtes, famous duck or goose confit, the black diamond of Perigord, the truffle, are examples among others.

Good holidays in Perigord !
